Southington’s Palko top GNAC rookie

WEST HARTFORD — University of Saint Joseph soccer player Sarah Palko of Southington has been named this season’s first Great Northeast Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week.

Palko had a goal and an assist in her first collegiate game, a 4-0 win over Manhattanville. The freshman midfielder has generated a team-best seven shots through the first two games.

Palko’s teammate, senior goalie Melissa Dodge, was GNAC Rookie of the Week, giving St. Joseph a sweep of the awards. Dodge made five saves against Manhattanville to post her 33rd career win and 24th shutout.

Game times change for Meriden Raiders

MERIDEN — There has been a slight change in the Week 3 schedule for the Meriden Raiders,

This weekend, all Meriden teams play Norwalk at Brien McMahon High School, 300 Highland Avenue, Norwalk.

The Saturday games have been pushed to later in the day: 8U at 1:30 p.m., 9U at 3:30 p.m. and 10U at 5:30 p.m.

The Sunday games remain the same: 11U at 10 a.m., 12U at noon and 14U at 2 p.m.

T’hawks, Eagles top boys soccer polls

The preseason coaches polls in boys soccer were released Wednesday. Glastonbury is No. 1 in the Class LL/L field. Tolland tops the Class M/S group.

Glastonbury, the reigning Class LL champ, got nine first-place votes and 117 total points to out-poll No. 2 Farmington (2 first-place votes, 104 points).

Glastonbury defeated Farmington 2-1 in double overtime in last year’s Class LL championship game.

No. 3 Fairfield Ludlowe and No. 6 Fairfield Prep received one first-place vote each in the Class LL/L poll.

Among the smaller schools, Tolland wound up at No. 1 with 66 points despite receiving not a single first-place vote.

No. 2 Ellington (60) and No. 3 Bacon Academy (56) had three apiece. No. 4 Lewis Mills had two.

Ellington beat Tolland 1-0 in last year’s Class M final.

New Haven baseball slates city series

NEW HAVEN — Fall ball is on the calendar in the Elm City.

The annual City Series between the baseball teams from Southern Connecticut State, Yale, Quinnipiac and the University of New Haven will be played October 9-10 at Yale Field.

The Friday night games pit Southern against Yale and Quinnipiac against New Haven. The consolation and championship games will be played the following afternoon.

Wolf Pack sign play-making defenseman

HARTFORD — The Hartford Wolf Pack have signed defenseman Kodie Curran to an AHL contract.

Curran, a 6-foot-2, 205-pound native of Calgary, joined the Wolf Pack last season after the end of his career at the University of Calgary. He played two games with the Wolf Pack.

At Calgary, Curran led all defensemen last year in the Canada West University Athletic Association with 8 goals and 16 assists. The 16 assists which were also a team high.

In 96 career games with the University of Calgary, Curran totaled 17 goals and 72 assists.
