New Opportunities Energy Assistance program

Area residents feeling the heat of rising fuel costs can find relief through New Opportunities of Greater Meriden’s “Energy Assistance Program.”

Program Specialist Phyliss Crosby said her agency is assisting “record numbers of first-time applicants.” “Many of our fuel applicants have never applied for help at any time in their lives,” she said. “Naturally, we do everything we can to speed help to these afflicted families.”

Area residents can qualify for a number of assistance options. Elliott said a variety of services are available accommodating a wide range of household dispositions and income levels “Our agency’s assessments can easily determine each person’s eligibility status,” he said. “Fuel payment scales are determined by people’s needs and their annual income levels.”

New Opportunities’ fuel programs cover a variety of “deliverable fuels” that include coal, wood, stove pellets, propane and oil among others. The agency also offers Connecticut Energy Assistance Services, as well as the Connecticut Home Assistance Program.” Applicants who have exhausted all other forms of energy assistance might also qualify for proceeds from our agency’s “ Walk For Warmth,” which is an annual event designed to raise emergency fuel funds for local residents.” Elliott said fuel applicants can also receive agency assessments that provide a wide range of New Opportunities’ services to qualified candidates. Most fuel applicants are unaware they can receive other forms of help from our agency.” Crosby said people can phone New Opportunities for fuel program appointments.“ We encourage anyone seeking help to call (203) 235-0278 for an appointment.”
