Peach season celebrated at Southington orchard

SOUTHINGTON — Everything was peachy Sunday at Rogers Orchards.

The fruit farm celebrated the peak of peach season with free peach sundaes at its Long Bottom Road and Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike locations.

Starting last Monday, customers received free sundae coupons for every $5 they spent at the orchards. The coupons were redeemable Sunday.

Claudia Porcellini of Wolcott said she visits the Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike store often to purchase fresh corn and nectarines, but the peach sundaes were an added bonus.

“This is my second one,” she admitted. “I had coupons from today and earlier this week. It’s delicious. Ice cream and peaches go well together. It’s a nice treat.”

Mike and Sharon Angelone of Wolcott are regulars at Rogers, not only for the fresh fruit but because their daughter has worked there for years. They are partial to apple pies, fritters and doughnuts, but they enjoyed the peach sundaes.

“I don’t normally eat ice cream in the morning, but it’s delicious,” he said.

Mark Bliss, manager of the Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike store, said the peach sundae Sunday is an annual event.

“We are right slam dunk in the prime of peach season,” he said, adding that the season usually stretches from late July into the second or third week of September. “People like to support their local business and they like to see where their fruit comes from.”

Bliss added that apple season runs from Labor Day weekend to late October. The orchards grows 20 different varieties of apples, but Sunday was all about the peaches.

“Peaches are really popular,” he said. “I think it’s just because it’s a short window.”

The window at the peach sundae booth was certainly bustling Sunday as Rogers Orchards employees Morgan St. Jarre, Allie Burns and Megan Bliss tried to keep up with the customers.

“We’ve made a lot of sundaes,” Burns said. “It’s a seasonal thing. At this time of the year, everyone raves about peaches. Once the peach season closes and the apples come out, everyone raves about the apples.”
