TONIGHT WINDHAM (0-1) at PLATT (1-0), Falcon Field, 6:30 p.m.
MATCHUP: Nonconference. LAST WEEK: Windham lost a 49-37 ECC shootout at home to Ledyard; Platt rolled past Farmington 42-7 in a CCC Division II crossover at Falcon. HISTORY: Here’s a matchup that hasn’t been seen since 1973, when Windham beat Platt 21-10. It was the last of 16 straight meetings in a series that dated back to Platt’s first varsity season in 1958. Windham has 9-7 edge. LOWDOWN: Platt goes for all-time win No. 300. See related story FRIDAY HARTFORD PUBLIC (0-1) at MALONEY (0-1), Falcon Field, 6:30 p.m.
MATCHUP: CCC Division II crossover. LAST WEEK: Hartford Public lost at home to Bristol Central 26-6; Maloney was shutout 28-0 in Windsor. HISTORY: The Spartans beat the Owls 26-14 last season at Falcon. Hartford Public leads the series 4-3. LOWDOWN: Always good to see old friend Harry Bellucci. The veteran Hartford Public coach is looking to rebound his team from a 3-7 season. The Owls are led by senior RB/LB Lavarey Banton, who had 118 yards rushing and 16 tackles vs. BC. WESTON (0-1) at SHEEHAN (1-0), Riccitelli Field, 6:30 p.m.
MATCHUP: Nonconference. LAST WEEK: Weston lost 33-17 to Bethel in the SWC Patriot Division; Sheehan beat Jonathan Law 41-26 in SCC Tier III. HISTORY: First meeting. LOWDOWN: The Titans look to make it a 2-0 start against a South-West Conference team that was 4-6 a year ago. Weston took some deep graduation hits, losing its quarterback and a number of skill players. Sheehan, itself a young team, should pay no attention to that. NOTRE DAME-FAIRFIELD (0-1) at LYMAN HALL (1-0), Fitzgerald Field, 7 p.m.
MATCHUP: Nonconference. LAST WEEK: Notre Dame fell short 32-27 in a back-and-forth SWC Patriot battle with Barlow; LH opened the Bill Weyrauch Era with a 7-0 win over the Creed Co-op. HISTORY: First meeting. LOWDOWN: First-year head Bill Weyrauch was hoping for early success to build confidence for his Trojans, and they got it last week. The defense was stout. Now the offense needs to capitalize on scoring opportunities. Too many went by the board against Creed. Notre Dame, a Class S school, is coming off a 5-5 season. QB Micah Brantley was 11-of-21 for 180 yards and 3 TDs last week. SIMSBURY (1-0, 1-0) at SOUTHINGTON (1-0, 0-0), Fontana Field, 7 p.m.
MATCHUP: CCC Division I West. LAST WEEK: Simsbury popped Hall 42-7 in a divisional game. SHS smacked Glastonbury 34-7 in a D-I crossover. HISTORY: Southington cruised 56-7 last year to win its seventh straight over the Trojans. This series dates back to 1910 and Southington leads it 35-10-5. LOWDOWN: The Trojans showed plenty of firepower vs. Hall led by QB Jackson Masters and RB Rafael Nieves, who ran for four TDs, including a 97-yarder. Southington had fine balance in Glastonbury, rushing for 165 yards and passing for 210 behind QB Will Barmore (15-for-23). Southington’s D, led by Joe Koczera (10 tackles) and Cole Brock (8), allowed just 112 yards while forcing three turnovers, two of them INTs by Sam Thomson, who also forced a fumble. CHESHIRE (1-0) at NORWICH FREE ACADEMY (1-0), NFA Turf Field, 7 p.m.
MATCHUP: Nonconference. LAST WEEK: In a top-10 SCC Tier I matchup, No. 6 Cheshire scored three unanswered second-half TDs to beat No. 10 Shelton 28-10. NFA beat Xavier 40-37 on a 15-yard TD pass with 15 seconds remaining. HISTORY: First meeting. LOWDOWN: NFA, a perennial power out of the ECC, knocked off Xavier by converting twice on fourth down before QB Shea McManaway hit Nolan Molkenthin with the winning pass. Now the Wildcats turn their attention to another SCC Tier I team. NFA, 8-2 last year, has gone to the Class LL playoffs four times in the last five years. Compiled by Bryant Carpenter
