State police to conduct extra patrols this weekend

State police will conduct extra highway patrols this weekend targeting distracted and drunk driving.

The extra patrols on Interstate 91 and Interstate 691 in Meriden will run through Monday. Authorities remind motorists to allow extra time, avoid texting and driving and not to drive under the influence.

“These dangerous driving behaviors claim the lives of our residents every year,” state police said in a statement. “Troopers will utilize both traditional and nontraditional state police vehicles on the roads searching for reckless and intoxicated drivers.”

During Labor Day Weekend last year, state police cited almost 1,700 motorists for speeding, issued more than 3,500 tickets for hazardous moving violations and arrested 51 motorists for driving under the influence. State troopers also investigated almost 300 accidents.
