WEDNESDAY SCHOLASTICS: Cheshire volleyball improves to 14-0; Lyman Hall & Wilcox Tech sweep

CHESHIRE — The Cheshire girls volleyball team continued its season of perfection with a 3-0 out-of-conference sweep of East Lyme on Wednesday night.

The Rams improved to 14-0 behind the play of Elena Piran (19 digs, 4 kills), Mia Juodaitis (5 kills, 3 blocks) and Karly Pedbereznak (10 assists, 5 digs, 4 aces).

Game scores were 25-16, 25-21and 25-23.

The victory completed a home-and-home sweep of the Vikings for the Rams. East Lyme fell to 6-5.

Lyman Hall 3, Hillhouse 0: Nicole Albert dished out 17 assists and 11 aces as the Trojans collected a 25-14, 29-27, 25-13 SCC crossover win over the Academics in Wallingford.

Albert added eight digs and two kills. Avery LaChance (10 kills, 5 digs, 4 aces) and Hailey Bruneau (5 kills, 4 digs, 2 aces) also had big nights for the Trojans (5-11).

Wilcox Tech 3, O’Brien Tech 0: R-J Athlete of the Week nominee Nicole Tiezzi notched a double-double with10 kills and 10 assists to lead the Tribe to a 25-6, 25-19, 25-15 CTC victory in Ansonia.

Tiezzi also had five digs and four aces. Chloe LaBissoniere added six assists and four aces as the Indians improved to 11-4.

Boys soccer

Cheshire Academy 1, Canterbury 1: Luca Mazzella scored the equalizer in the 51st minute to earn the Cats the NEPSAC tie in New Milford.

It was a fast-paced, evenly played game. Canterbury (3-2-2) had a 16-13 edge in shots. Cats keeper Owen Kempton made 15 saves for CA (2-6-2).

Girls soccer

Cheshire 1, Lauralton Hall 1: The Rams (6-4-1) held a 1-0 lead at the half in this SCC interdivisional game at Alumni Field on a goal from Elizabeth Lurz, who was assisted by Lila McNamee.

Lauralton (7-2-3) tied it up after the break on a goal by Sara Bartoli.

Platt Tech 1, Wilcox Tech 0: A goal scored at 22:04 of the first half by Platt Tech’s Cheyenne Saunders stood as the game-winner in this CTC battle in Meriden.

The loss ended a five-game winning streak for Wilcox (5-6-1), which got strong performances from forward Katie Kearney, midfielder Jailene Ruiz and defender Kaylene Valentin.

Quadalupe Ramirez had nine saves for the Tribe. Juliana Pinto made 10 for the Panthers.

Platt 5, Hartford Public 0: The Panthers had five different goal scorers in their second win of the season on Tuesday in a CCC crossover with the Owls in Hartford.

Julia Misner, Elizabeth Garlock, Lizbeth Aguilar, Nayely Salazar and Anahi Gutierrez all found the back of the net. Sar’Ja Jenkins made three saves in the shutout.

Platt is now 2-7-1. Public is 1-9.

Field hockey

Hamden 7, Sheehan 1: Leading scorer Stephanie Phoenix gave the Titans a 1-0 lead before the Green Dragons reeled off seven unanswered goals in a SCC tilt at Riccitelli Field.

Elisa Tolentino assisted on the Phoenix goal. Jailyn Sandoval made 20 saves in net for Sheehan (3-4-3-1).

Taylor Klesyk scored three times for Hamden (6-3-1-1).

Wilbraham & Monson 3, Cheshire Academy 1: Brooke Gunsalus had the goal for the Cats in the NEPSAC setback in Cheshire. She was assisted by Feize Turkmen.

Liv Redding made 10 saves in the cage. CA is 1-7.
