SOUTHINGTON — A Waterbury man faces charges after police say he attempted to steal a bottle of alcohol from a Meriden-Waterbury Road package store.

Nino Nealy, 24, was charged Sunday with sixth-degree larceny and operation of a motor vehicle while under suspension. He was released on $1,500 bond and is due in Bristol Superior Court on Oct. 23.

About 3:12 p.m. Sunday, police responded to Wineland Discount Liquors, 1543 Meriden-Waterbury Road, for a panic alarm, said Sgt. Jeffrey Dobratz. The store clerk told police Nealy took a bottle worth $49.99 off a shelf and allegedly placed it down the front of his pants. He walked out of the store without paying, Dobratz noted. The clerk yelled at Nealy and removed the bottle while Nealy fled in a vehicle. Police located Nealy nearby, pulled him over and determined his license has been suspended since 2012, Dobratz said.
