Meriden Superintendent Mark Benigni has been making local news for many years.
He was a Democratic city councilor and first ran for mayor in 2001 as an unaffiliated candidate with the Republican endorsement, unseating Democratic incumbent Joseph J. Marinan Jr. in an upset. Benigni returned to the Democratic party two years later for a successful re-election bid.
He stepped down as mayor in 2008 to further his career as an educator having been named principal of Cromwell High School.
In 2010, Benigni returned to his native Meriden as school superintendent.
