The Newington/Berlin/Manchester/Cromwell high school hockey team faced two more conference teams this past week and came away with two wins.
In the first game, NBMC played Wethersfield/Rocky Hill/Middletown/Plainville.
Both goalies played great in the first period, stopping all the shots they faced.
NBMC opened the scoring late in the second period when a Pat Doherty [M] slap shot went past the WRMP goalie with 2 minutes remaining. He was assisted by Joe Fogarty [M] and Garrett Pilney [M].
Then, a minute later, Kyle Bucher [C] found the back of the net on a back hand, giving NBMC a 2-0 lead after two periods. That one was assisted by Justin Roberts [M].
WRMP would score in the final 30 seconds to make the game close, but NBMC goal-tender David Mix [M] would made his team’s 2-1 lead hold up.
Mix finished with 26 saves.
In its next game, NBMC visited another conference foe, Enfield/East Granby/Stafford, currently the first-place team.
The Enfield coop opened the scoring late in the first period and expanded its lead just a minute and a half into the second period.
With 4:30 remaining in the second, Kyle Bucher’s short-handed goal cut NBMC’s deficit in half.
The third period went back and forth, up and down the ice. With under two minutes remaining in the game Cade Palladino [C] scored with a wrist shot from the slot assisted by Ethan Ranger [C] and Justin Stergos [C].
And NBMC kept coming.
With one minute reminaing in the contest, Joe Fogarty made it a 3-2 game, and the Enfield coop had no answer. Fogarty’s strike was assisted by Cade Palladino.
David Mix turned away 18 shots in net.
With seven games to go in the regular season, NBMC owns a record of 8-5.
