BASKETBALL: Berlin boys earn state tournament berth

The Berlin Redcoats lost their third straight game, falling to the Simsbury Trojans 77-59 last week in a boys basketball clash.

Struggling to score, Berlin fell behind early and was never able to recover against a tough Simsbury team.

Much of this can be attributed to the strong defense played by the Trojans.

Berlin was repeatedly denied close shots and Simsbury forced turnovers throughout the game.

However, the Redcoats were able to make a few runs in the second half, cutting their deficit to just seven in the third quarter.

“I think we played some of our best basketball in the second half. Simsbury came out and shot the ball unbelievably in the first half … We just gave them a little bit of space and they hit their shots,” BHS coach Mike Veneziano said.

Despite the late effort from the Redcoats, the Trojans held on.

Simsbury made 10 threes and managed to get to the foul line 18 times in the winning effort. Jackson Butler scored 26 for the Trojans while three of his teammates also scored in double figures.

The Redcoats’ leading scorer this season, Gianni Fanelli, was limited to just 5 points, while Holden Murphy led the way with 14. Redcoat captain Ryan Hyde added 11 points while Giancarlo Tufano and Mike Constantine each netted seven.

Said Tufano, “In the first half they did not miss. But in the second half, when they stopped being abnormal, I think we showed that we could hang with them … In the next four (games), we should be okay.”

Berlin went out and proved this Friday, with a win over the Platt Panthers.

The Berlin squad bested the scrappy Meriden team in a hard-fought contest, holding them off for a 57-53 victory to punch their ticket to the upcoming state tournament.

Fanelli had 21 points for the Redcoats (8-9, 4-3).

Platt (1-16, 1-6) trailed throughout and scored 22 team points in the fourth. Highlighting the Panther defense were Carson Coon (13 points) and Tre Carter (11).
