Over the past two weeks, the Berlin Redcoats strung together another pair of wins to improve to 5-0. The first win came against the Plainville Blue Devils, the other, against the Avon Falcons.
Against the Blue Devils, the Redcoats were determined to bounce back to their dominant form after narrowly edging out Northwest Catholic the week prior.
In the days leading up to the Berlin-Plainville game, players from both teams were exchanging words on social media, reigniting the old Berlin-Plainville rivalry.
“We were fired up that week because of all the talk on social media,” said Alex Halkias, one of the Redcoat captains. “We wanted to prove to the state why Berlin was ranked top 10 in the polls.”
The 49-0 win may have done just that.
Berlin attacked early and never let up, scoring 35 in the first half.
Marco Scarano, Larry St. Pierre, Halkias and Zach Hrubiec all scored. Scarano found the end zone twice and added 11 tackles. Mike Rivera, Danny Lynch, Tyler Tralli and Dom Scarano all had at least five tackles each for Berlin.
The highlight of the game came in the second quarter when Hrubeic ran 34 yards for a touchdown on a drive ignited by an interception by junior Tony Undercuffler.
Against Avon, it was much of the same for the Redcoats – dominance.
In the first quarter, the locals packed on 21 points with St. Pierre, Andrew Brochu and Halkias all getting early TDs.
The Redcoats continued to pile on the points as the game wore on, with Hrubeic and Scarano scoring while Halkias doubled up.
The Redcoat defense was strong once again, stopping the Falcons each time they got close to scoring.
With only 13:35 of possession time, the Redcoat offense showed its efficiency. Leading the offense was quarterback Kevin Dunn, who completed seven of his nine pass attempts. Dunn threw for two touchdowns and 174 yards.
