Healthy shake business to open in Berlin

BERLIN – Banana Split, Blueberry Pie and Maui Colada are some of the shake options people can choose from at The Fresh Monkee when it opens on the Berlin Turnpike next month.

“The Fresh Monkee started from an idea that there was no quick, fast serve place to get protein shakes,” said owner Judy Flynn, owner of the business. “It was sort of a balance between the sugary, smoothie chains that are out there and the juice bars.”

The Wethersfield native opened her first location in 2014 in her hometown with a second location in Glastonbury the year after. A food truck soon followed and an express shop in Avon.

The Fresh Monkee will open its third full location at 224 Berlin Turnpike mid-December in the new retail building next to the new Acura Dealership.

“I’m thrilled she chose Berlin,” said Chris Edge, town economic development director. “I’m finding Berlin is a very healthy community, and we have a lot of folks looking to be healthier.”

Flynn’s business focuses on natural recipes. Fresh fruits, vegetables and proteins are used to create meal replacement shakes for people on the go.

“We’re trying to break the belief that smoothies are just sugary drinks,” Flynn said.

The Berlin location will be 800 square feet and feature a style similar to the Wethersfield and Glastonbury locations.

Stew Henderson, an employee at The Fresh Monkee in Glastonbury, will serve as the general manager of the new store.

“We get to know our customers really well,” he said.

The shake business caters to all needs, including gluten free, dairy free and allergies. One of the more popular shakes is the Ultimate Green, which blends spinach, cucumber, green apple, banana, pineapple, ginger and chia and flax seed with water.

“It keeps the fiber in and keeps you full longer,” Flynn said.

Protein ice creams are expected in the spring, while protein hot chocolate is available now.
