Berlin resident David Thiede was elected as Commander of Division 25 of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary in New London for 2019. He is in charge of five area Flotillas encompassing over 175 members.

The area of responsibility for Division 25 is from the Connecticut River, east to Rhode Island and from the Massachusetts border to Long Island Sound including Orient Point, N.Y.

Coast Guard Auxiliary members promote boating safety, offer public education courses, conduct vessel safety checks and augment the mission of active-duty personnel at Station New London.

Thiede is one of several qualified Coxswains who perform water search and rescue missions and provides maritime security for dignitaries visiting the Coast Guard Academy in New London.

Division 25 also staffs the Coast Guard sub-station on Fishers Island, N.Y. every other weekend from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
