CHESHIRE — The Board of Education appointed an assistant elementary school principal Thursday as the school district prepares for the opening of a new academic year.
Kristin Lopa, a reading and math specialist at Chapman School, will serve as assistant principal at Norton and Doolittle schools. She has been an elementary school teacher since 2007.
“She’s a well-respected teacher,” School Superintendent Jeff Solan said. “She’ll be a great addition to our team.”
Anne Harrigan, a school board member, said she’s been impressed with Lopa and was pleased she was taking the position.
Lopa’s appointment Thursday was the latest position filled this summer.
“It is very fluid, not just with our student population but with our staff,” he said.
Eight retirements occurred throughout the summer, with the latest taking place Thursday morning. Many of the open positions were filled by those already in the district, according to Solan.
“A lot of internal folks transferred into those positions,” he said. “It was this cascading effect throughout the entire summer.”
Despite challenges, Solan said the district was ready for the first day of classes.
“We’re ready to go for next Thursday and we’re excited about the opening of schools,” he said.
