Cheshire Fall Festival kicks off with food trucks, continues today



CHESHIRE — Louie Ferraro, 2-and-a-half years old, had just eaten a hot dog when he and his father, Adam, went to their next food truck to grab some soft serve ice cream.

“Take a big bite, you ready?” the elder Ferraro said to Louie, who obliged.

“Yum, you want more?” his father asked. Louie nodded. It was the younger Ferraro’s first time attending the festival, his father explained.

Nine food trucks from area vendors were parked on the lot across from the skatepark and athletic fields at Bartlem Park on Route 10 on a sunny evening with a light cool breeze to kick off the Cheshire Fall Festival with “Food Truck Friday.”

The festival, hosted by the Cheshire Chamber of Commerce, continues today.

As crowds began forming lines for falafels, burgers, fried dough, cupcakes, rolls and other fare, Cheshire native Christine Ohlman and her band were checking their sound as they prepared to deliver a set of soulful, guitar-driven rock ’n’ roll.

“It’s always a great time,” Ohlman said, explaining during a quick pause in the sound check that it’s her fourth time headlining the festival.

Daniel Curry, of Meriden, was preparing to serve up steamed burgers at the Ted’s Restaurant’s food truck. He said last year, they sold several dozen burgers. On Friday night, he hoped to do about five dozen.

“That would be pretty good,” he said.

The weather was perfect for the event.

“It’s not too hot. It’s a good day on a food truck,” Curry said.

Toni Suarez was ready to bite into a hot Connecticut-style lobster roll with a side of drawn butter. Her daughter, Sami, had a piping hot plate of fried dough covered with sauce and cheese.

“It’s one of her favorites. Sauce and cheese — that’s the only way to go,” Toni Suarez said.

As for her, she was ready to dive into the lobster roll.

“I heard they were good. I’m very excited. It’s the end of the summer. And I’ve had a few lobster rolls this summer,” she said.
