Cheshire council reelects Rob Oris as chairman, Paul Bowman as vice chairman

CHESHIRE — The Town Council met in executive session at the end of Tuesday’s meeting to discuss personnel matters, but there’s been no announcement yet on a town manager replacement.

Councilors are close to picking a replacement for retiring Town Manager Michael Milone and said they’ve narrowed the pool of applicants to four finalists.

Town Council Chairman Rob Oris had hoped to have selected the next town manager by the start of the new council term. Milone retires in the summer and councilors want the new town manager to shadow him before the veteran town employee leaves.

Also on Tuesday, the Town Council unanimously reelected Oris as chairman as well as Republican Paul Bowman as vice chairman at its organizational meeting.

The current council was sworn in Sunday. All members of the previous council returned save for Democrat Michael Ecke, a long-time incumbent who lost his reelection bid this November to David Veleber, a Republican and Planning and Zoning Commission member.

Republicans hold six of the nine council seats.

Tim Slocum, a council Republican and former chairman, nominated Oris for the council’s top post. Oris was chairman of the previous council.

“I think he’s done a wonderful job, a tremendous job and I think he deserves the job for another two years,” Slocum said.

Oris said he wanted to continue working collaboratively and advance “items and agendas that are critically important to this community.” The council faced continued uncertainty with the state budget among other challenges.

“I’m humbled and honored to sit in this chair for another two years. I take this job very seriously,” Oris said. “We’re going to need all hands on deck to deal with everything that’s in front of us.”

Bowman thanked councilors for their support and agreed with Oris that the council has challenges ahead of it.

“We have our work cut out for us,” he said. “I’m sure we’ll all work hard and do a great job.”
