Police: Cheshire man assaulted woman

CHESHIRE — A local man faces charges after police said he assaulted a woman on New Year’s Eve.

Gregory Uren, 51, of 1750 Waterbury Rd., was charged with third-degree assault, second-degree strangulation, interfering with an emergency call and disorderly conduct.

The incident began when police responded to Uren’s residence about 11 p.m. Monday for a 911 call with an open line. A woman told police everything was alright and police left.

Police returned to the home around 2:10 a.m. Tuesday after receiving a report that Uren threatened a friend on the phone, according to a police report. The woman they spoke with earlier reported that Uren had assaulted her during an argument, including punching her in the face and choking her.  She also told police she didn’t report the incident earlier because Uren threatened to have her daughter taken away by the state,  the report said.

Uren was arraigned in Meriden Superior Court on Wednesday. The judge set bond at $5,000 and entered a protective order barring Uren from any contact with the woman.
