Cheshire inmate charged with falsely accusing counselor of sexual assault

CHESHIRE — An inmate faces new charges after police said he falsely reported being sexually assaulted by a counselor at Manson Youth Institution.

Barry Turner, 19, was charged by warrant with second-degree false statement and interfering with an officer.

On April 20 state police responded to Manson, 42 Jarvis St., for a report of an inmate being sexually assaulted by an employee, according to Turner’s arrest warrant. Turner reported that a female counselor touched him inappropriately on three separate occasions on April 9.

Security video showed the counselor was not near Turner that day, the warrant said. On April 21, Turner submitted a written statement saying he lied about the incidents because he was upset with the counselor over a disciplinary matter, the warrant said.

Turner was arraigned in Meriden Superior Court on Wednesday. According to statements in court, he has six pending cases, including a charge of first-degree sexual assault. A public defender stated Turner is now being held at a facility in Hartford.
