CHESHIRE — A Plainville man faces charges after police said he spat on an officer and a paramedic.

Michael Stagis, 31, of 135 Redstone Hill, Plainville, was charged Monday with assault on an officer, interfering with police, and breach of peace.

The incident began around 5 p.m. when police received multiple 911 calls about a man stumbling in the area of the 300 block of Maple Avenue. Officers found Stagis and observed he was unsteady on his feet, according to a police report.  When police spoke with him, he became combative, shouting an obscenity and spitting at an officer.

After Stagis was restrained and arrested, an ambulance was called to evaluate him. He began yelling profanities at the medical personnel and spit in the eye of one of the paramedics, the report said.

Stagis was arraigned in Meriden Superior Court on Tuesday. According to statements in court, Stagis has 18 previous convictions for charges including larceny, possession of narcotics and interfering. The judge set bond at $5,000 and continued the case to Nov. 6.
