CHESHIRE — Police say one of the drivers involved in a two-vehicle crash early Friday afternoon on Waterbury Road has died.
Police said the other driver also suffered significant injuries. Both drivers needed to be extricated from their vehicles. Meanwhile, police said, a child who was sitting in a child safety seat in one of the vehicles did not need to be extricated and suffered minor injuries.
Police did not identify either of the drivers, but said they were taken by ambulance to St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury. Police said the child suffered minor injuries
The accident happened just after noon. Waterbury Road was closed until just before 5 p.m. The only traffic police allowed through the site were school buses and other vehicles transporting students and staff at nearby Darcey Elementary School.
Police said the regional Naugatuck Valley Crash Investigation Team is investigating. The cause is still under investigation.
While the road was closed, police urged drivers to use alternate routes and had set up a detour. Tractor trailers were asked to avoid exit 26 off of Interstate 84 and use Interstate 691 instead, police said.
