Athletes – whether students, amateurs, professionals or wannabees - are all invited to PARC’s 18th walkathon being held Saturday, Oct. 6 at Norton Park. To honor Danny Coughlin, an original PARC member from when the non-profit was founded 61 years ago, the annual fundraiser is being renamed the Helen & Danny Coughlin Annual Memorial Walk. Helen Coughlin, Danny’s mother, was one of the founders of PARC which provides family centered services for people with developmental disabilities including healthy living activities, life skills, regular programming and community inclusion.
Walk registration begins at 9 a.m. with opening ceremonies at 10 a.m. followed by the walk. Food, music and opportunities to win gift baskets are also planned. A popular feature of each walkathon is the chili festival which is free to enter. For a small donation, people are welcome to sample and cast their ballots for their favorite chili beginning at 11 a.m. PARC is also collecting non-perishable food items for Plainville Community Food Pantry – those who contribute an item will receive one ticket to possibly win a prize. The rain date is the following Saturday, Oct. 13.
The call has been put out to students of all ages, athletic fans, athletic directors, sports coaches, local sports organizations as well as the public at large.
Organizing this event is multi-faceted and plans are underway. Businesses and individuals interested in sponsoring can sign up now. Sponsor signs are also being sold not only to promote a business but to honor or memorialize someone special or to even convey a sentiment or congratulations. PARC officials noted that they were grateful to Elizabeth Norton Trust for funding new advertising signs this year that will be placed around town.
PARC, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization. All donations are tax-deductible and directly benefit programs. PARC is open to residents of Plainville and surrounding towns.
