The Meriden YMCA’s Spanish class learned about Dia de los Muertos and made masks that are part of the holiday tradition.
Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a Mexican festival that celebrates and honors dead ancestors on Friday, Nov. 1 and Saturday, Nov. 2. The festival combines some of the ancient traditions of the Maya, Aztec, Nahuatl, and other indigenous groups, with Catholic ones.” The holiday is a happy one, honoring ancestors and the cycle of life. This Mexican festival is celebrated close to Halloween but is not the Mexican version of Halloween.
