SOUTHINGTON – Children will have the opportunity to climb into a variety of emergency, construction and other vehicles Saturday during the 17th annual Touch-a-Truck event co-sponsored by American Legion Auxiliary Unit 72 and the town’s Recreation Department.

The activities will start at 10 a.m. at the Southington Drive-In, 995 Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike.

“It’s a great fun day,” said Eileen D’ Andrea, American Legion auxiliary unit member.

The event typically draws hundreds of children. Public Works equipment is usually displayed, as well as emergency vehicles and other service trucks.

“They’re always excited to get in there,” said Recreation Director David Lapreay. “It’s common to hear all the truck horns.”

About 25 trucks will be on display.

A local DJ will provide music throughout the day. There will also be face painting, glitter tattoos, and raffles.

D’ Andrea said two bikes will be raffled off this year as well as gift baskets. Proceeds help fund child youth programs in the community.

The rain date is Sunday, May 19.
