MERIDEN – An adult and a 3-year-old child were struck by a vehicle on Summer Street Friday afternoon.
The incident occurred shortly before 4 p.m. near the corner of Summer and Wood streets.
Police said both patients were transported to Hartford Hospital by ambulance. The extent of their injuries was unknown.
Witnesses said one of the vehicles involved in the incident fled the scene. The driver of the other vehicle remained on scene, police said.
Police tape blocked off the street where a damaged black car came to rest in a yard.
Cheyenne Valentin, 20, said she was waiting for a school bus to drop off her cousin when she witnessed the accident involving the two vehicles.
Valentin said the woman struck was also waiting for the school bus, with a toddler. The toddler ended up trapped underneath the vehicle. Before police and firefighters arrived, a group of nearby residents lifted the vehicle off the child.
“I was afraid to lift the car but eventually we decided to lift the car and pull the boy out,” Valentin said.
