MERIDEN — A city woman accused of killing her 8-year-old son before setting their Davis Street home on fire in November 2016 is next due in court in early July.

Karin Ziolkowski, 41, faces murder and second-degree arson charges.

Ziolkowski was scheduled to appear in New Haven Superior Court on Monday for a motion hearing, according to the state judicial website. The case was continued to July 3.

Ziolkowski is accused of suffocating her 8-year-old son before setting fire to their home at 13 Davis St. using Tiki torch oil, according to Ziolkowski’s arrest warrant. Ziolkowski suffered severe smoke inhalation in the blaze and was taken to Hartford Hospital.

Authorities arrested her nearly a year later in North Carolina and charged her in the death of the 8-year-old. The cause of death was ruled homicidal asphyxia and acute intoxication from an antihistamine, which was also found in Ziolkowski’s blood. The medical examiner determined the boy was dead prior to the fire.

On Nov. 23, 2016, police learned of a Twitter account belonging to Ziolkowski. On Nov. 10, 2016, four days prior to the fire, she tweeted “fire extinguisher” and “devil’s playground,” following by “#takethatasyouwill,” according to the warrant. The next day she tweeted “empty promises,” again followed by “#takethatasyouwill,” the warrant continues.

Two days before the fire, the warrant states, she tweeted “why did I have a child.”

Ziolkowski remains held on $1 million bond.
