MERIDEN — A gas station development company wants to knock down an existing 1,600-square-foot gas station along East Main Street and build a new 2,500-square-foot station.
Global Montello Group Corp. received approval for the project from the Zoning Board of Appeals this week and now needs site plan approval from the Planning Commission.
The new gas station would be constructed along a commercial corridor at 938 E. Main St., next to Comfort Inn & Suites hotel and across the street from Wendy’s and CVS Pharmacy.
The Getty gas station and convenience store previously located on the site hasn’t been in operation in some time, City Planner Renata Bertotti said. The Getty gas station was first opened in 1965 and was enlarged in 2002, Bertotti said.
The property is currently owned by Leemilts Petroleum Inc. and was appraised in 2017 at $701,000, according to city records.
A representative from Global Montello Group Corp. couldn’t be reached Friday. The company is one of the region’s largest independent owners, suppliers, and operators of gasoline stations and convenience stores, with approximately 1,600 locations, primarily in the northeast, according to its website.
The company needed a special exception from the ZBA for the project because while gas stations are a permitted use in the commercial zone, they require special exception review, Bertotti said.
