MERIDEN — The owner of Grove Street bar hopes to purchase two vacant city properties for a parking lot.

Mr. Bentley’s owner Anthony Pellegrino has offered to purchase 194 and 198 Grove St. from the city for $5,000. The city’s Economic Development, Housing and Zoning Committee is expected to review the sale March 20.

The lot would benefit not only the business, which currently has only street parking, but also residents living in the apartments upstairs, Pellegrino said. The bar is located at 190 Grove St.

Pellegrino hopes to merge the Grove Street parcels and build a 17-space parking lot. The move fits in with his-long term goal to convert the bar into a restaurant.

“My big plan really is I want to end up putting an addition on,” Pellegrino said. “I want to be more of a restaurant and less of a bar. I have a lot invested in this neighborhood. I’m looking forward to trying to turn Grove Street around.”

City Planner Bob Seale said further development in that neighborhood could piggy back off large-scale development downtown.
