MERIDEN — La Poblanita Grocery and Deli recently completed its addition into vacant space at 41 Colony St. and is now seeking a permit to sell beer and wine.
”Yes we want to sell beer and wine, but only inside,” said business owner Georgina Ponce.
The small grocery store, which makes burritos, quesadillas, breakfast sandwiches and more, added 900 square feet — enough room for six tables and a food preparation area. A ribbon cutting was held Tuesday.
The permit would make La Poblanita one of the first restaurants in the city’s transit-oriented district to sell alcohol.
“We’re definitely excited to have La Poblanita expand to include beer and wine,” said Business Recruitment Specialist David Cooley. “To date there has not really been a convenient restaurant to relax and enjoy a beer or a glass of wine just steps from the new CTRail station in Meriden.”
According to recent studies, about 75 people arrive and depart on the train daily in Meriden. The city hopes to increase ridership.
The Ponces hired Miguel Castro, owner of Prestige Construction, to complete the addition. Castro, also a city councilor, worked with the family on the plan.
The new beer and wine option will allow La Poblanita to expand its dinner hours, Castro said.
“Rather than lose business, they took the opportunity to expand,” he said.
The liquor permit is one of several recent developments in the area around the train station. NY Deli and Krispy Krunchy Chicken opened last week at 177 State St. and Mr. Taco opened two months ago at 69 Miller St. The Downtown Coffee Shop added a range hood to expand its menu on West Main Street and The Landmark diner plans to open next month.
