MERIDEN — Mother’s Day was the final day Huxley’s Bookmark Cafe served customers in its old location before it moves across the street to its new home.

Owner Dimitrios Klonaras said the new restaurant at 1376 E. Main St. is expected to open next week following equipment installation, final inspections, and employee training.

“Next Monday hopefully,” Klonaras said. “We’re doing the finishing touches, the (fire prevention) system, and have final inspections Wednesday. Thursday we’re doing a little bit of training.”

Klonaras bought the building at 1376 E. Main St. for $300,000 in 2017 after Skybox Bar & Grill failed to open due to financial issues. When he bought it, the exterior was completed, but the plumbing and interior electrical work needed to be done. The former Huxley’s building at 1333 E. Main St. was built in 1955 and is in need of repairs and upgrades, including parking.

The new building is 4,750 square feet, nearly doubling the size of the current location and will allow for more seating and parking. Klonaras said he intends to keep the shelves of books but will offer an expanded menu and coffee options for breakfast and lunch.

In the meantime, Taino’s Smokehouse Prime opened last month at 1388 E. Main St. with a limited menu, and plans to ramp up to full-service and and full menu.

On the other side of Huxley’s, an office building that will include an Ion Bank, is under construction at 1336 E. Main St.
