MERIDEN — John Barry Elementary School has been named a 2019 National Blue Ribbon School winner, according to an announcement Thursday by U.S. Department of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos.
John Barry is among four National Blue Ribbon winners in the state. The others are Guilford High School, North Mianus School in Riverside, a section of Greenwich, and Tracey Magnet School in Norwalk. The state Department of Education certified the schools had met the criteria for the honor.
The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program recognizes public and private elementary, middle, and high schools based on their overall academic excellence or their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups, according to the U.S. Education Department.
”We recognize and honor our important work preparing students for successful careeers and meaningfurl lives,” DeVos said in a video announcement. “Your students’ success demonstrates what’s possible when committed educators partner with parents and community leaders to create vibrant, challenging cultures of learning.”
John Barry was one of 362 schools named National Blue Ribbon schools nationwide.
