MERIDEN — A West Hartford man has been charged after he reported that he had placed a bomb on his motel room door.

Oscar Rodriguez, 25, of 139 Mayflower St., West Hartford, was charged Friday with first-degree false statement.

On Feb. 2 about midnight, police received a 911 call from a man who said he was going to kill himself and “take police with him,” according to Rodriguez’s arrest warrant.  The caller also said he had placed a bomb on the door of his room at the Elwood Motel, 2055 N. Broad St.

A police negotiator and SWAT team responded, gained access through a window, and found Rodriguez on the floor of the room, the warrant said. Police later determined there was no bomb.

Rodriguez was taken into custody and for medical evaluation. He was arraigned in Meriden Superior Court on Friday and released on a promise to appear in court on March 18.
