MERIDEN — Police Lt. Lawrence Guidobono has died following a recent illness.
Black bunting was placed outside and inside the police department on Thursday. Officers wore mourning bands across their badges. Sgt. John Mennone said the department would make a statement about his death today.
Guidobono was hired in 1985. He joined the SWAT team in 1988, becoming part of the unit’s sniper team. In 1997 he was promoted to sergeant and supervised community police patrols near Griswold Street and Hicks Avenue. In 2001, he moved to internal affairs and later managed the department's accreditation process. He was promoted to lieutenant in 2003.
City Councilor Michael Cardona, chairman of the Public Safety Committee, said he was notified by email of Guidobono’s death. Cardona said he called City Manager Tim Coon to confirm the email. Cardona called the news “a shock.”
“He dedicated a lot of years to the city of Meriden,” Cardona said Thursday. “I’m very sorry for the loss to the department, to the city and to his family. I was very saddened to hear the news.”
Mayor Kevin Scarpati said he was devastated after receiving the email notification. He called the death “a tragedy” made even more sad because it occurred around the holidays.
“Our deepest gratitude for his many years of service on behalf of the entire city of Meriden,” Scarpati said. “To his family, friends and loved ones during this difficult, difficult time.”
The exact cause of Guidobono’s death was not available Thursday. An autopsy is pending further study, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said.
Mennone said service arrangements haven’t been finalized.
