MERIDEN – Twenty years ago this month, August 1999, summer construction projects were in full gear, a drought made the summer heat a little worse, and resident enjoyed plenty of late summer traditions such as the Puerto Rican Festival. 

Lucille Janatka took over as the new CEO Midstate Medical Center while staff said goodbyes to retiring Ted Horowitz. 

Construction projects were under way at Thomas Edison Middle School, the Meriden Boys & Girls Club, New Dam pond and St. Stanislaus School connector. 

The new version of the Volkswagon Beetle began showing up at area dealerships this month.
