MERIDEN — Platt powder puff defeated Maloney 35-31 on Monday in the 41st game between the cross-town rivals at Falcon Field.
After losing to or tying Maloney for seven straight years, Platt beat Maloney for the second consecutive year.
“All these girls wanted was to say they have a winning streak and now they can,” Platt head coach Chantal Pilsko said after the game.
Platt defeated Maloney 21-13 last year after holding off a late rally by Maloney.
This year’s game also came down to the final seconds. Maloney had a chance at a last-second game-winning touchdown, but Platt defender Tailyah Gillespie tackled Maloney’s Masia White inside the 20-yard line as time expired.
Pilsko said her team was “so prepared for that kind of situation” from practicing different game situations.
Running back Ja-lynn Washington lead Platt with four touchdowns, including one in the first minute of the game.
“She was our weapon,” Pilsko said.
“It’s a big accomplishment. We worked really hard for this,” Washington said.
