MERIDEN — A local man faces charges after police said he assaulted a woman and damaged a car with a golf club.

Chadwayne Thaxter, 23, of 69 Wilcox Ave., was arrested on Saturday and charged with criminal attempt to commit second-degree assault, second-degree threatening, third-degree criminal mischief and second-degree breach of peace.

Police responded to the home on Wilcox Avenue on Saturday around 9:11 p.m. for a report of a domestic dispute, according to police reports. Police spoke with a woman who said Thaxter assaulted her outside the home, the report said. She said he began punching her car windshield and mirrors before grabbing a golf club to damage the car, the report said. He tried to hit the woman with the golf club, but was pulled back by relatives, the report said. She told police Thaxter threatened to kill her.

Thaxter denied anything physical took place, the report said. He was taken into custody and later released on $10,000 bond. He appeared in Meriden Superior Court on Monday. The judge entered a protective order barring Thaxter from contact with the woman. The case was continued to Sept. 26.
