A Meriden man has been charged after police say two people exchanged gunfire Saturday in New Britain.

Jorge Gonzalez, 37, of 57 Prospect St., was charged with criminal attempt to commit first-degree assault, illegal discharge of a firearm, carrying a dangerous weapon, first-degree reckless endangerment, possession of a weapon inside a motor vehicle, criminal use of a weapon, and criminal possession of a firearm.

On Saturday around 4:30 p.m. police responded to the area of 1407 Corbin Ave. for a report of gunshots. Officers found numerous shell casings of two calibers in the road, and a car that was reportedly involved in the incident nearby.

Police determined two people were involved in a dispute and fired gunshots at each other, police said. Detectives found one of the suspects, later identified as Gonzalez, in Meriden. A firearm was also found in the car he was driving.

Gonzalez was arraigned in New Britain Superior Court on Monday. He was held on $1.5 million bond and is due back in court on March 22.

The investigation is ongoing and further arrests are anticipated. Anyone with information is asked to contact Lt. Adam Rembisz at 860-826-3131.
