MERIDEN — A local 17-year-old was charged as an adult this week in an attack that left a man in critical condition last year, according to police.

Elijah Butler, 17, of 22 Webster St., was charged Monday with first-degree assault aided by others and conspiracy to commit first-degree assault aided by others.

He appeared in Meriden Superior Court on Wednesday. His case is being screened for the part A docket in New Haven Superior Court, which handles more serious matters.

On Nov. 19, police responded to the area of 92 Sherman Ave. for a report of an assault, according to an arrest warrant. Police found a man unconscious and in critical condition lying in the road.

Surveillance video from a nearby home showed four suspects, one of whom was later identified as Butler, surround the man, before one of the suspects struck the man in the head from behind.

The man fell to the ground, and another suspect struck him in the head five times with his fist, while two other suspects stomped on and kicked the man in the head, the warrant said. The four suspects then fled.

When interviewed by officers, Butler denied being involved or knowing about the assault, the warrant said.

He is due back in court on March 27.
