MERIDEN — A local couple face charges after police responded to a domestic dispute on Saturday.

Police were called to the couple’s home around 1:45 a.m. and found Garcia with a swollen lip and Shelton with a cut on his face, according to a police report. Garcia told officers Shelton caused her injury. She was taken to the hospital and Shelton, who refused medical treatment, was arrested.
Police later learned that after she suffered the injury to her lip, Garcia started swinging a kitchen knife, striking Shelton in the face, the report said. A witness gave the same account to police.
Garcia and Shelton were arraigned in Meriden Superior Court on Monday. The judge set bond at $5,000 for Garcia and released Shelton on a promise to appear. Garcia is due in court on March 28 and Shelton is due in court on March 29.
