Police identify person killed in Thanksgiving house fire on Carpenter Avenue in Meriden

MERIDEN — Police released the identity of the person killed in last month’s Thanksgiving morning house fire on Carpenter Avenue.

Michael Avery, 69, of Meriden, was killed in the fire at 161 Carpenter Ave. on Nov. 23, police spokesman Sgt. Darrin McKay said Tuesday. According to city records, Avery was a co-owner of the home, which has been deemed a total loss.

On Monday, Deputy Fire Marshal John Yacovino said the cause of the fire was undetermined due to damage at the home and a lack of witnesses.

The two-story, single-family house was engulfed in flames when engines arrived during the early morning hours.

“Due to the large volume of fire and the amount of water needed in the area, mutual aid tankers were called in to supplement water supply,” Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Dunn said.

Yacovino said eight investigators worked for several hours during the initial part of the investigation.
