Hand rails stolen from two Meriden churches

MERIDEN — Portions of hand rails were reported stolen from two local churches in recent weeks.

When members of Saint Rose of Lima Church arrived Saturday morning, they noticed that the lower hand railings were missing.

Sections of the bronze railing that lead up the church steps were taken overnight, said Rev. James Manship. The church is located at 35 Center St.

”Police were notified and they were very responsive,” Manship said.

Manship said a police report was filed and the church is working to locate the missing rail by checking scrap yards in the area.

“People were pretty upset about the whole thing,” Manship said. “We’re really kind of surprised.”

The church is working with neighbors to review surveillance video in the hopes it may provide more information, Manship said.

A week prior and less than a mile away, Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 20 Catlin St., reported that the church was missing a hand rail.

Representatives from St. Andrew’s could not be reached for comment.
