Ted’s Restaurant in Meriden now selling famous steamed cheeseburger during XL Center events

MERIDEN — The steamed cheeseburger has a new presence in Hartford.

Ted’s Restaurant, a Meriden staple at 1046 Broad St., recently added a concession stand at the XL Center in downtown Hartford. The stand is open for all arena events, including UConn basketball.

”Any event that’s up there, as long there’s food concessions, we will be open,” Ted’s owner Bill Foreman said.

Representatives from the XL Center reached out to Ted’s this summer about adding a concession stand in the arena. The stand opened the first week of October.

The stand sells an abridged menu of steamed cheeseburgers and drinks.

”We’re just trying to expand our reach,” Foreman said. “The more people we can get it to, the better the brand itself grows.”

In addition to the restaurant’s Meriden location, Ted’s has a location in Cromwell, a food truck and trailer.

”Not everyone can get to one of our stores,” Foreman said. “We’re taking our food to the people as opposed to them coming to us all the time.”

The XL Center stand has been open at about eight events so far.

“It’s a cheeseburger, but it’s a unique cheeseburger,” Foreman said. ”We’re just excited about the opportunity. You don’t really expect something like this to come along very often.”

Charles Tillem, general manager of Spectra Food Services, which manages concessions at XL Center, said the company’s goal is to partner with locally-owned restaurants.

”It’s part of our mission statement, to partner with the local community,” Tillem said.

Tillem says businesses such as Ted’s offer more unique concessions compared to ballpark and arena staples such as hot dogs, nachos and popcorn.

”It provides variety,” he said. “Ted’s Steamed Cheeseburgers is so unique. We’re really happy they’re a part of our operation.”
