MERIDEN — Two boxes full of lighted prayer candles sit on the sidewalk of Crown Street at the spot where a fatal car accident occurred late Friday night.

Several people gathered around the memorial, including a woman who said the victim, Alex Alvarez, 21, was her child’s father. Pictures, balloons and stuffed animals are piled on the sidewalk.

Police have not officially identified the person killed in the crash, but family and friends at the makeshift memorial and friends outside Alvarez’s home on Catherine Street said the driver was Alvarez.

At about 11:40 p.m. Friday, a Lincoln hit three parked cars on the left side of the road near 196 Crown St., then swerved to the right, struck two more parked cars and burst into flames, police said.

The driver was trapped in the car and died at the scene, police said.

Witnesses told police they saw someone run from the car. Police are searching for the passenger.

The woman said Monday she believes the passenger was a friend of Alvarez, but she could not identify the person. (203) 317-2225 Twitter: @LaurenSievertRJ
