NORTH HAVEN — A 53-year-old driver avoided serious injuries Monday afternoon after his car rolled over in the left lane of Interstate 91 south.

Meanwhile, the crash, which occurred shortly before 1:30 p.m., resulted in traffic headaches for commuters as first responders had to close the lane in order to free the man, who was trapped in his vehicle.

State police said Russell S. Carpenter, 53, of Windsor, was driving south on I-91 in a 2006 Chevrolet Aveo, when his vehicle ran off the left side of the roadway and rolled onto his roof.

The North Haven Fire Department sent two fire engines and an ambulance to the scene, helping to free the trapped driver.

Carpenter suffered minor injuries, but declined to be taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital, state police said. He was cited for failure to drive in the proper lane.

The accident slowed traffic for about an hour.
