Police: Man who stole drill set at North Haven Home Depot caught after locking keys in car

NORTH HAVEN — A Waterbury man is in custody after police said he took a drill set from Home Depot Thursday, and, while attempting to flee the store, realized he locked his keys in a car he reportedly stole.

Samuel Lopez, 55, of Waterbury was taken into police custody Thursday, but the charges were not immediately available.

Lopez walked into the Home Depot on Universal Drive around 7:15 a.m. and picked up a drill combination set valued at $300, said police spokesman Capt. Kevin Glenn. Lopez ran out of the store with the drill set and when he got to the BMW he was driving, realized the keys were locked inside.

Lopez tried to smash the car window with a brick as police arrived at the scene, Glenn said. Lopez attempted to run away, but was eventually taken into custody. Police later discovered the BMW was reported stolen out of Waterbury.

Lopez reported an injury while being taken into custody.
