NORTH HAVEN — A popular New Years resolution is to hit the gym, but that will be a little harder after both Retro Fitness and Planet Fitness closed their doors in December.
Retro Fitness, 87 Washington Ave., closed Dec. 24, 2017. A sign on the door urged members seeking a refund to contact the corporate office or ABC Financial, a gym membership management company.
Retro Fitness opened in October 2014, the first Connecticut location of the New Jersey-based chain of fitness centers.
According to an email sent to members, low membership caused the business to fold.
“In the 3 years that we have been open we have yet to reach the number of members needed to make the business profitable,” the email stated.
A statement from the Retro Fitness corporate office said “each Retro Fitness location is individually owned and operated by the franchisee and the decision to close was their own.” Franchisee Betsy Platia, of Guilford, was unavailable for comment.
Retro Fitness member Danielle Conchita had been a member for two years, joining after her first son was born.
“It was exactly what a new mom needed,” Conchita said on Jan. 1. “No pressure, no upsales. Just support.”
She utilized the gym’s day care for her children, now ages 1 and 3.
“I enjoyed this gym and the owners were really kind, involved people,” she said. “The gym was small, clean and the day care was fantastic. It is a shame our town can't seem to keep smaller businesses around.”
Dot Logan said she was one of Retro Fitness’s first 20 members. She liked the convenient location and worked out in the cardio theater.
“I spent a lot of time watching movies while I was doing the treadmill,” she said.
She said she visited the gym three to four times a week and worked out on Dec. 23, the day before the closure.
“There was not a lot of people around,” she said. “I figured it was because it was two days before Christmas.”
The next day she received the email informing members of the gym’s closure.
She also praised the owners and the gym’s welcoming atmosphere.
Another location of a chain gym, Planet Fitness, closed its location at 150 Universal Drive on Dec.16.
A statement from Planet Fitness corporate office said the location “consolidated” into the Hamden location. Members of the North Haven location received 60 days notification, the statement said.
“The Hamden location features newer equipment as the club replaced much of its existing equipment,” the statement said, “and added new, additional equipment as of this past August.”
The statement also said the Hamden location has better parking and features tanning, massage chairs, HydroMassage beds and Total Body enhancement beds.
