NORTH HAVEN — The fire department helped SIMS Metal Management extinguish an equipment fire Monday morning.

No injuries were reported.

The fire occurred just before 6:30 a.m., in the salvage facility at 234 Universal Drive. The fire department assisted employees for about an hour, according to Fire Chief Paul Januszewski.

Januszewski said some equipment was damaged.

The fire was called in by a passerby traveling on Interstate 91. Heavy smoke was reported on the highway near exit 8 for about an hour.

Januszewski said the facility takes in mostly cars and appliances and separates the pieces into piles for recycling and resale. Due to the materials it works with, fires are common at the site, he said.

The facility was deemed safe for employees to continue working after the fire was under control, Januszewski said.
