PLAINVILLE — A Kohl’s employee faces charges after police said he stole almost $35,000 worth of merchandise from the store.

Paul Larochelle, 41, of 328 Chestnut St., New Britain, was charged on Aug. 14 with first-degree larceny.

On June 11, police responded to Kohl’s, 200 New Britain Ave., for a report of an employee that was caught stealing, according to Larochelle’s arrest warrant. Police met with security staff, who said Larochelle was seen on security video taking merchandise from the sales floor and hiding them outside under a trailer.

After he finished his shift, Larochelle drove to the dock area, and store security witnessed him attempt to retrieve the items.

Larochelle told police he had been stealing items from the store for months and selling them to a Newington pawn shop, the warrant said.

Police retrieved a database list from the store and discovered Larochelle made 23 transactions from November 2017 to April 2018. The list of items were things commonly sold at Kohl’s and were valued at about $34,587, the warrant said.

Larochelle was arraigned in Bristol Superior Court on Aug. 15 and released on a promise to appear in court on Sept. 7.
