Plainville police: Southington man struck man in face with beer bottle at bar

PLAINVILLE — A Southington man faces charges after police said he struck another man in the face with a beer bottle at a local bar on Saturday.

Michael Cruess, 25, of 1225 Queen St., Southington, was charged Saturday with second-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment, second-degree threatening, and second-degree breach of peace.

Police responded to the Blue Plate Tavern, 18 Woodford Ave., around 1:20 a.m. for a report of a fight. A woman told police Cruess struck a man in the face with a beer bottle, and the other man responded by punching Cruess in the face, knocking him to the floor, according to a police report.

The man said he punched Cruess because he was in fear of his safety, the report said. Police found Cruess hiding between two cars on Woodford Avenue. Cruess was taken into custody and later released on $10,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in Bristol Superior Court on Feb. 11.
