Fiery crash on Route 72 in Plainville kills driver



 

PLAINVILLE — State police are investigating a fiery fatal crash on on Route 72 early Thursday.

The accident occurred in the eastbound lanes near exit 3 at around 3 a.m. State police said the car traveled through a metal beam guard rail, struck a cement bridge abutment and caught fire, eventually becoming engulfed in flames.

The driver, who was not immediately identified, was the car’s only occupant and died in the crash, state police said.

A section of the highway was closed while authorities investigated.
