SOUTHINGTON — Moving her business from Plainville to just over the town line to a Queen Street plaza, Marguerite Swan said she’s hoping to continue building her “different” kind of salon.

Salon Margo opened Thursday at 1079 Queen St. She was previously on East Street in Plainville.

Swan hopes to make it a place that’s welcoming for police, firefighters and other first responders who she feels are often facing criticism.

“They always fix our mess,” she said.

Swan is still finishing decorations, but one wall has police and fire flags along with photographs of first responders. She’s planning fundraisers and other events to benefit emergency personnel.

“I want to create a space where they feel appreciated,” Swan said.

On Friday, Noah Tamayo, 13, was getting a haircut for the impending start of school as well as his birthday. He and his mother, Leslie Tamayo, first started going to Swan’s salon in Plainville, where it was next to Leslie Tamayo’s favorite nail salon.

They’ve been going since and found the Southington location more convenient.

“I like how thorough she is. She’s very friendly,” Leslie Tamayo said. “Very good with the clientele.”

The location was formerly a pet grooming business. Swan built out much of the salon herself, creating the front reception desk and other furniture. The space is very different than under the previous tenant.

“We cleaned everything up, we added trim,” she said.

Swan, who’s worked in other salons, said she’s now looking for stylists to work on commission but wants to keep chair rental low.

“I don’t believe in sucking them dry of their commissions,” Swan said.

While she found it difficult to get the necessary permits to open in Southington, she sees more opportunity in a town with a thriving small business community. Her customers from Plainville have stayed with her thus far.

“Everybody just started coming in,” Swan said. “It was just word of mouth.”
